Detailed Semrush Review
Before we get into the Semrush vs. Similarweb debate, let me first review each platform separately. This will help you understand each platform better and what it can do for your business.
Let’s first start with the Semrush review.
Semrush is a powerful, industry-leading, all-in-one SEO platform that you can use for all your SEO needs. From keyword research to local SEO, it has all the advanced SEO tools that any business needs in its SEO checklist.
Moreover, Semrush can easily integrate with other platforms like Google Analytics, to provide you with more value. And, it has a browser extension for Google Chrome, Safari, and Firefox.
Dare I say, Semrush has one of the best SEO Chrome extensions and is a must-have for all businesses.
What’s more?
Semrush is not just an SEO tool, as it can also help you with content marketing, advertising, and social media marketing.
Let’s have a brief look at all of these features. Given that Semrush offers tons of features, I will divide this section by the broad toolkits that it has and cover only specific features under each toolkit.
1. SEO
The main features that I will cover in this section are:
- Keyword Research
- Local SEO
- On-Page and Technical SEO
- Link Building
- Rank Tracking
Let’s cover each, one by one.
Keyword Research
The main tools and dashboards for keyword research that Semrush offers are:
Keyword Overview
In this dashboard, you can get a detailed report on any particular keyword, including all relevant keyword data and keyword analysis. You can see metrics like volume, global volume, SERP features, keyword variations, etc.
Keyword Magic Tool
This is the one tool that Semrush is most known for and for good reason: It is brilliant.
It is the main keyword research tool that Semrush offers. You can find broad match, exact match, and phrase match keywords for paid search ads or simply get a list of all related keywords for SEO.
Want to know the best part?
You can get detailed keyword analysis and a list of keywords in a neatly organized table with key performance indicators for each listed keyword.
Keyword Manager
This tool helps you create custom keyword lists that you can save for later use.
Keyword Difficulty Tool
This is the tool that you will need to use to compare the level of competition for each keyword and choose the best ones for your business.
Pro Tip: Also check out the organic traffic insights feature, where you can find all the keywords that currently drive organic traffic to your site.
Local SEO
This is a fairly new toolkit introduced by Semrush to help local businesses with their SEO efforts and improve their local SEO strategies.
You can find the following features under this section of the Semrush dashboard:
- Listing Management: It helps you create and optimize your local directory and Google My Business listings.
- Local Rankings Report: Here you can find your business rankings in Google Local Finder.
- Review Management: Use this to track and respond to your customer reviews directly from the dashboard.
Pro Tip: Use the listings management tool to maintain consistent information across business listings.
On-Page and Technical SEO
Semrush offers many tools for your on-page and technical SEO. Some of the most important ones are:
- Site Audit: Use this to get a detailed report on your website’s current performance and areas of improvement.
- Markup Report: Find in-depth information about the markup use and implementation errors (if any), for your website.
- SEO Content Template: Use this to find recommendations on how to improve your on-page content to get better SERP rankings.
Pro Tip: Use the site audit tool to conduct regular SEO audits and keep improving your website’s performance.
Link Building
The three main off-page SEO features that Semrush offers are backlink analytics, backlink audit, and suggestions for link building.
The Backlink Analytics tool can help you analyze all the backlinks for any website, including your competitors’ websites. You can use it to identify key referral traffic data sources for your competitors.
The Backlink Audit tool assesses your backlink profile to identify toxic backlinks.
The Link Building tool provides you with opportunities to build new backlinks.
Rank Tracking
This is the dashboard where you can track your website’s rankings and compare them with those of your competitors.
It has three main features/tools:
- Position Tracking: Track your website’s rankings on your target keywords.
- Ranks: Track your rankings against competitors or simply get a list of top-ranking websites in any industry.
- Sensor: Track Google SERPs volatility due to daily changes in rankings.
Pro Tip: Use the Sensor tool to detect major volatility, which could indicate a major algorithm change for Google.
2. Competitor Research
This is where you will find all the advanced SEO and competitive intelligence tools that Semrush offers.
Want to learn what these are?
Find them below.
Semrush Traffic Analytics
You can use this to get in-depth traffic analytics data for your website and even compare it with your top competitors. Audience insights, traffic journey, geo-distribution, subdomains, top pages, and bulk analysis are some notable insights that you can get under various tabs.
Keyword Gap
Using this tool, you can analyze the keywords for you and four of your competitors, side by side. You can use this to find keyword opportunities for your website.
Market Explorer
This is a powerful tool that helps you analyze web analytics data at scale. You can not only benchmark your performance against competitors, but also the industry average.
Pro Tip: Use Market Explorer to create custom domain lists of up to 20 domains and regularly track them.
3. Advertising
Semrush can help you find keywords for search ads, research your competitors’ ads, and even create highly targeted ad campaigns.
However, I will limit the scope of this review to only SEO and competitor research as these are the main areas where Semrush and Similarweb compete with each other.
4. Content Marketing and Social Media
Similarweb doesn’t have similar features to these, so I will not review these for the purpose of this post. You can read my detailed Semrush review to learn more about all of its features in detail.
Now that you have a broad understanding of Semrush, let’s look at Similarweb as well.

Detailed Similarweb Review
Similarweb offers four main solutions—Digital Research Intelligence, Digital Marketing Intelligence, Sales Intelligence, and Investor Intelligence.
The solution that is most similar to Semrush is Digital Marketing Intelligence. So, for the purpose of this post, I will discuss only this solution, as the other solutions are sold separately.
Excited to learn more about Similarweb and its features?
Here you go.
1. Keyword Research
Similarweb has a powerful keyword research tool that you can use to find target keywords and sort them based on parameters like volume, competitiveness, etc. You can also use it to monitor the search traffic trends in your niche.
Want to know the best part?
You can monitor your share of traffic for any particular keyword through the “Traffic Share Split” metric.
Pro Tip: Create and save keyword lists for future use to save time and effort sorting and filtering keywords again.
2. Competitive Analysis
Just like Semrush, Similarweb also has some competitor analysis and benchmarking features. It allows you to benchmark your traffic with competitors across various channels.
You can also use this to study your competitors’ strategies and identify things that you can incorporate into your SEO or content strategy.
Similarweb also allows you to analyze competitors’ backlinks or referral traffic and advertisements.
Broadly speaking, Similarweb offers a breadth of competitive analysis tools that may look the same as Semrush. However, when you use both platforms, you will feel that Semrush does offer certain advanced features like bulk analysis.
Pro Tip: Benchmark your ad creatives with those of your competitors to improve and optimize your ad performance.
3. Referral Research
This feature is similar to Semrush’s backlink analysis tool and provides comprehensive referral traffic analysis.
Use this to find, analyze, and optimize your backlinks and affiliates. You can also conduct a referral traffic analysis for your competitors.
However, I have to say that SImilarweb cannot match some of the more advanced features that Semrush offers like a comprehensive backlink audit.
Still, it is a good tool for basic backlink analysis and optimization.
Pro Tip: Use referral traffic analysis for competitors to find backlink opportunities for your website.
4. Ad Creative Research and Media Buying
This is the feature that lets you analyze your competitors’ ad campaigns and ad creatives in detail. You can use this to understand what works for them and improve your own ad campaigns.
You can also benchmark the performance of your ad campaigns against that of your competitors.
Another brilliant use of this tool is to find top-performing publishers and ad networks that you can use for your ad campaigns.
Pro Tip: Use creatives research to understand what type of ads perform the best and create similar ones for your campaigns.

Final Verdict
After comparing all of the comparable features of Semrush and Similarweb, I think I prefer the former. I would like to end this Semrush vs. Similarweb debate by saying that Semrush is the more advanced tool, but Similarweb is a good alternative.
All the reasons why I prefer Semrush over Similarweb are:
- It offers a lot more features than Similarweb, including tools for content marketing and social media.
- Semrush has a huge keyword database of over 20 billion keywords.
- Similarweb does not have bulk analysis and benchmarking features like Semrush.
- Semrush has specialized tools for local SEO, which are very useful for small, local businesses and website owners.
