Russian traffic officer – Colonel Alexei Safonov is accused of leading a criminal group that received millions of dollars in bribes from truckers.
A high-ranking official of the Russian traffic police, accused of leading a criminal group, has been arrested on suspicion of taking bribes.
Police Colonel Alexei Safonov and six others were arrested by Russia’s Investigative Committee in the southern region of Stavropol Territory.
Officials released a video of Safonov’s mansion, its luxurious rooms, extravagant jewelry, a billiard room and even a gold toilet bowl.
He is believed to have headed a criminal group that issued permits to grain carriers in exchange for bribes.
The permits allowed the transporters to ignore regional laws, even while crossing police checkpoints.
The Russian Investigative Committee, which is roughly equivalent to the FBI in the United States, said the group received 19 million rubles (£187,568) in bribes.
The arrested gang members included a former senior traffic police inspector, a traffic police inspector and four civilians.
