Over the past 12 months, freelancers working in technology, digital marketing and design have been in the highest demand.

This follows a study conducted by online labor exchange PeoplePerHour, which analyzed data from 15,000 freelancers during that period. The results showed that the most in-demand freelance jobs are technology, digital marketing and design, with an increase in projects for freelancers with strong marketing, technical or programming skills.

Web developers made up 21% of the demand, followed by content writers (13%), graphic design (11%), SEO specialists 8%, mobile app developers (3%), social media managers and (3%).

There are believed to be 2.2 million freelancers in the UK, and the number continues to grow, making the profession a potentially lucrative option for many professionals both as a full-time and part-time job. With many self-employed workers making a living in the “gig economy” and a growing number of companies choosing to use freelance resources to be more efficient and save on costs, there is a high demand for freelance skills.

Xenios, founder and CEO of PeoplePerHour, commented, “Every aspect of normal life has changed in the last 12 months, from how you shop to how you run your business.

“Small businesses and the self-employed have been some of the hardest hit sectors, receiving less government support than those who work full-time. But while some industries are thriving and making bigger profits than ever before, other industries have suffered.”

Xenios noted that many businesses have to adapt and move online, requiring certain skills and competencies at some point in time, making the use of freelancers especially attractive to many companies.

He added: “At the same time, many freelancers in skills such as photography and event management are having to upgrade their skills to diversify their package.”
