What a wonderful “sorry we didn’t win” present from dentsu to Coca-Cola (Coca-Cola just gave nearly all of its account to WPP, leaving dentsu with just a small bite). It looks as though Coca-Cola has produced the Christmas ad of the year.
The 2.30 minute commercial, Chimney, by dentsuMB UK and Rogue director, Sam Brown, has all the essential Christmas ingredients in all the right amounts – a classic Christmas story with an inventive new twist, a perfect transition from sadness to joy, a Christmas song underpinning (a rousing version of Mary Poppins’ Chim Chim Cher-ee performed by the London Metropolitan Orchestra), tear-jerker appeal…and it ties in with the brand’s famous (albeit currently superseded) theme – sharing and its current platform, real magic.
Here is the BTS video:
Various versions of the commercial have been launched in nearly 100 markets. Most will use 90-second versions. In the US, the commercial is accompanied by a chance for fans to request personalised Santa videos on Cameo in English, Spanish or French.
There will also be a live virtual event on December 1 in which Santa will present the Chimney film with celebrity guest pop-ins and the return of Coke’s famous red truck, the Holiday Caravan, that tours the country offering people a chance to donate to charities, and Christmas bottles of Coke featuring Santa.
