‘Crutch‘ by Band Of Horses – Single Rating: 4/5
It can only mean one thing when lovely guitar riffs reverberate throughout the GSGM camp! Band Of Horses are back with a bang with ‘Crutch.’ When this band appears on the sound system, any stress disappears. If you don’t believe us, give them a try!
Hooked on the band for years, they continue to stir the soul, and on ‘Crutch,’ they don’t hold back with their intrinsic traits flowing out like there’s no tomorrow. It’s a single that picks up right where they left off on their last album, which came out in 2016. However, it does not seem like it has been that long since ‘Casual Party’ was born.
Meaning Of Crutch
Ben Bridwell’s voice is as powerful as ever, and his plot is a thought-provoking trip. He talks about love and relationships but not conventionally reaching for the sick bucket. Instead, he associates crutches with a relationship. In a recent interview with Pitchfork, the band stated: “Obviously ‘Crutch’ means some of the things that I was dependent on. My relationship for one. I think I wanted to say, ‘I’ve got a crush on you,’ and I thought it was funny how relationships also feel like crutches. I feel like everybody has had a time when nothing goes right and you still have to carry on.”
The music is upbeat and has an undercurrent of indie that isn’t often audible these days. We live in an era of ultra-polished music, where everything goes under a skilled mastering suite, and it’s fair to claim that a lot of dynamics get lost in modern music. That is not the case with ‘Crutch,’ which remains authentic and raw while thrilling for the right reasons.
